How might posture be utilized as a design principle to shape innovative design outputs?
Work-in-Progress
Aim: This research aims to explore if posture could be a vehicle for innovation in product design.
Overview: This thesis explores how incorporating posture as a central design element in product development impacts the ability to generate new designs, and impact how our designs are received. This study examines the relationship between psychology, physiology, and Human-centered Design.
Application 1: Designing through posture - how might changing posture result in different design outputs? For example, if we want to design a new service, could posture be used to help us enter into a state of humility and the mindset of servanthood? What effect might that have on the ideation workshop outputs?
Application 2: Posture for design - how could posture be used as a mechanism to shift the way products are experienced? For example, could we design products that also encourage certain postures, which could then affect intangible outcomes like confidence, concentration, and collaboration? For instance, most medical devices are designed for practical function, but may be missing out on the opportunity to design the way people feel about themselves. Or, if we are designing a cafe, how would the positioning, height, and orientation of the counter impact the way staff act towards customers? And likewise, how does it affect how customer’s perceive the staff?
